What is a co-op and why would I want to join?

The Growing Circle Co-op is a members-only purchasing group. Members buy and sell local products in the online marketplace.

By definition, a co-op is owned by its members. As a member of the Growing Circle Co-op, you will be participating in the creation of a local food and commerce system in Prince Edward Island.

As a citizen, you will know exactly who produced the food or product, where it was grown or made, and what production practices the farmer or artisan uses. You will also have the ability to order from a specific producer. Food and local products have a story, and as an eater or purchased of local products, you are part of that story.

As a farmer, grower or producer, you will be connected with citizens who value quality products, healthy local economies, and acknowledge a fair income for your work.

How does the Co-op work?

The Growing Circle Co-op is a virtual farmers’ market. Each week, our producers members post what they have available in our virtual farmers' market. Members have one week in which to place orders online. The following week, members and producers bring the orders to the depot, where volunteers sort everything into customer orders. The orders are delivered to pick-up locations across PEI.

What does it cost to join?

Membership costs $20 for a shareholder and $40 for a non-shareholder per year. It costs $100 to have a lifetime share in the Growing Circle Co-op. The membership fee revenue pays for capital expenditures such as ice chests, computer software, etc.

The Co-op charges producers 10% for selling through the Co-op, and consumers pay 5% for buying through the Co-op. This money is used to pay for operating expenses such as mileage, ice, postage, etc.

Where are all the help documents?

Why should I sell my products through the Growing Circle Co-op?

For a limited annual cost, producer members can gain access to the virtual farmers' market. With their own username and password, producer members can add new products and sell online. Individual members have an increased online presence and the Co-op can promote this service on behalf of all members

The costs associated with selling through the Co-op are as follows:

1. All sellers must be Co-op members in good standing (see the membership costs). Membership fee revenue pays for capital expenditures, such as ice chests, computer software, etc.

2. There is a 10% fee on top of all sales made through the virtual market. This money is used to pay operating expenses, such as mileage, ice, postage, etc. (In addition, consumers pay an additional 5% to buy through the Co-op. )
